I Am From The Projects by Elsa Ramirez

Elsa_RamirezI Am From The Projects

I am from the projects
I wonder when I will move the f— out of here
I see a place filled with guns, drugs and violence
I want to be different from everyone else around here because where I come from no one seems to make it out
I am from the projects

I pretend to be carefree because where I’m from there’s no such thing as feelings
I feel ashamed of where I live
I worry that I’m never going to make it out of this place
I cry because there’s no such thing as peace when you live in the hood
I am from the projects

I understand that nobody can teach me how to make it out of the ghetto
I say, “Some day I’ll take my parents out of here.”
I dream of becoming rich
I hope to be a successful person and be able to say, “I finally made it out of the hood.”
I am from the projects.
